Abstract:<\/strong> It has<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>been widely discussed<\/span>\u00a0that systematic communicative disablements – such as disbelief, misinterpretation and unintelligibility – can be unjust<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Our<\/span>\u00a0communicative<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>practises extend beyond merely sharing information<\/span>; we also share and contest which questions are worth answering, which answers suffice, what parts of our shared body of information matter<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0This is a central aspect of our social epistemic practices. One way we do this is via<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>perspectival communication<\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span>in which what one communicates includes an interpretive stance or ‘way of looking’ at the world, via frames like metaphor and narrative<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In this paper, I consider how perspectival communicat<\/span>ion<\/span>\u00a0may be wrongfully frustrated, constituting an unjust communicative disablement. I<\/span>\u00a0analyse how<\/span><\/span>\u00a0perspectival communication can be distorted due to dominant ‘mis-interpretive’ resources. I<\/span>\u00a0specifically examine the way in which marginalised people\u2019s testimony relating to their own experience of marginalisation, may<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>be misinterpreted<\/span>\u00a0in such a way as to justify<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0perpetuate that marginalisation thereby ‘backfiring’.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Moreover, I<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>highlight that attempts to counter hermeneutical injustice are especially vulnerable to this form of communicative disablement.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
