Semester 2 Issue |
Welcome to the latest issue of LINK, our dedicated newsletter for members of the Family Programme at the University of 58³Ô¹Ï.
Since our last issue, it has been great to see so many of our Family Programme members at Development events online and in person, from our Global Burns Night in January to our Making Waves Lecture Series in London and Edinburgh and the fifth edition of Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews in April.
In this newsletter you'll find an update on the Making Waves Campaign, which reached the halfway mark in March, and you can also hear from alumni, students and academics, all with interesting stories to tell. In addition, you can view photographs from two very popular University traditions, the Gaudie and May Dip, and perhaps even spot your student.
As the semester draws to a close, it's almost time to welcome the Class of 2026 to our global alumni community. If you are planning a summer visit to 58³Ô¹Ï, please do pop in to the Development Office and say hello.
In the meantime, I hope that you enjoy reading this issue of LINK.
With best wishes,
Robert Fleming Director of Development |

Making Waves: The Campaign for 58³Ô¹Ï |
 |
The University's Making Waves Campaign surpassed the halfway mark in March. This is a major milestone towards the Campaign total of £300m for four key projects that will ensure the continued development of the University through capital projects, enable world-leading research, and open doors to students, regardless of circumstance.
Funds raised are supporting undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for students who would otherwise be unable to study at 58³Ô¹Ï; they are funding endowed academic posts that will drive world-leading research; and they are enabling the delivery of our two capital projects: 'New College' and the Digital Nexus building. Both 'New College' and the Digital Nexus building were granted planning consent from Fife Council earlier this year.
Our families have played a huge part in this effort, and we are proud that the University of 58³Ô¹Ï is leading the way in the UK for parent giving. We are incredibly grateful for your support. |

Traditions in focus: the Gaudie and May Dip |
 |
Each year on 30 April, students gather in their gowns for the Gaudie, a torchlit pier walk in honour of John Honey, a student in the year 1800 who rescued five members of the crew of the Janet of Macduff, a ship that had run aground off East Sands.
At sunrise on 1 May, students gather on the beach to take part in May Dip. This tradition is said to promote good luck in their exams and cleanse any 'academic sins' the students have committed throughout the year.

What our students say about... the town |
We asked scholars and founders of the University's Highland Cow Society, Lydia and Elise, about their favourite spots in town. |
|
|
Lydia MRes Social Anthropology "One of my favourite places in 58³Ô¹Ï is the Fife Coastal Path. It's always a must-see for any guests I have, and I like the moment when you turn and can see all of 58³Ô¹Ï in the distance.
"The path is particularly special because Kinkell Byre's Highland cows sometimes graze on it!" |

Elise MLitt History of Photography "One of my favourite places in 58³Ô¹Ï is Castle Sands, namely because it is where some of my first memories were made as I got used to cold plunging with friends! But also because as a bird-watcher it has so much wildlife to see. From Eurasian oystercatchers to eiders, it is a bustling ecosystem we need to advocate for and help support."
