Guidance for School Presidents
A University-led review of learning and teaching (URLT) is taking place in your School or Department. As School President, you are asked to participate in the review process before, during, and after the review. Your contribution is highly valued and plays an important role in ensuring that the student perspective is represented.
What is a URLT
A URLT is an opportunity for the University to explore learning and teaching across your School or Department. It aims to highlight good practice and enhance the student experience.
Before the review
In advance of the review, you will
- Review and comment on the Reflective Analysis (RA) prepared by the Director of Teaching (DoT)
- Prepare and submit a Student Voice document
- Assist the DoT in identifying students to participate in meetings with the review panel
Student Voice
The Student Voice document is a summary of student feedback and is a key contribution to the review.
School Presidents are encouraged to use an online survey to collect feedback from students at all levels of study (undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research students). A short, simple survey with the following three questions is recommended:
- What is working well
- What could be improved
- Any additional issues or priorities
You may also include feedback gathered through discussions with class representatives or students as part of your School President role.
In addition, the Academic Representation Coordinator (Students’ Association) may provide relevant student feedback collected from existing sources (e.g. SSCC minutes or handover reports).
Submission timeline
- Surveys should be circulated at least one month before the review, where possible
- The Student Voice document should be uploaded to the Microsoft Teams channel six weeks before the review
During the review
The review panel will meet with students and may follow up on themes identified in the Student Voice document. They will be particularly interested in understanding student experiences.
Students are encouraged to:
- Share what works well
- Talk honestly about any challenges
- Suggest areas for improvement
Discussion topics may include:
- Teaching, assessment, and feedback
- Learning resources and study space
- Opportunities to provide feedback
- Student support
As School President, you will participate in a student meeting (typically the Honours session).
Note:
- Staff from the School or Department will not be present during student meetings
- Comments will not be attributed to individuals
After the review
Following the review, you will:
- Meet with the DoT to discuss the evaluative report and proposed actions
- Be invited to comment on planned responses to recommendations
The School will share outcomes with students, including through SSCC
Your input helps ensure that student perspectives are reflected in:
- The School’s response
- The action plan
- Ongoing improvements
Support and further information
You will have opportunities to:
- Meet with the Quality team and President of Education (Students' Association) at the start of the year
- Ask questions and seek guidance throughout the process via the Microsoft Teams 'Student Voice' channel.
