Key documents for the review

The review process is supported by a number of key documents prepared by the School or Department, which provide the review panel with a clear understanding of provision, performance, and priorities, and form the basis for discussions during the review. Templates are provided below.

Reflective Analysis

The Reflective Analysis (RA) is the principal document prepared for the review. It should be developed collaboratively with colleagues and is submitted alongside the Advanced Information Set (AIS) six weeks in advance.

The writing of the RA is normally led by the Director of Teaching (DoT), with input from colleagues. Students should be consulted where possible, and the School President given the opportunity to comment prior to submission. DoTs are encouraged to begin drafting the RA at least three months in advance.

An effective RA:

  • Follows the headings in the template provided
  • Covers all credit-bearing and non-credit bearing provision and wider aspects of the student experience
  • Provides honest, evidence-based analysis and critical reflection
  • Reflects on student feedback (e.g. SSCCs, MFQs and national surveys)
  • Identifies good practice, areas for enhancement, and ongoing challenges
  • Demonstrates collective input from staff and students
  • Is clear, concise, and well-structured (typically 15-20 pages). Bullet points are encouraged when highlighting a number of areas within sections of the RA
  • Is submitted as a PDF using Arial 12-point font

Advanced Information Set

The AIS comprises pre-existing documentation and supports the review panel in identifying areas for further exploration during the review. The AIS should be read alongside the Reflective Analysis (RA) as part of an integrated set of information.

Review programme

Reviews follow a standard structure, with a programme agreed in advance in consultation with the Quality team.

The DoT is responsible for identifying staff and students to meet with the review panel and providing a draft programme at least four weeks before the review. The Quality team will issue invitations in line with the agreed programme.

The review date should be held in colleagues’ diaries as early as possible.

Action plan

Following the review, the School or Department will submit an action plan outlining responses to the recommendations, including clear actions and timelines. Actions should be discussed at the Teaching Committee prior to submission.

The action plan should be submitted to the Academic Monitoring Group (AMG) for approval. The AMG may request further information or follow-up, where appropriate. Once approved, the action plan should be shared with staff and students.

Year-on update

One year after submission of the action plan, the School or Department will provide a Year-on update outlining the outcomes and impact of actions taken.
