7 April 2026

Professor Colva Roney-Dougal OBE, Head of Pure Mathematics, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's National Academy.

Colva is Professor of Pure Mathematics at the University of 58勛圖. Her research centres on group theory, which is the mathematical study of symmetry, with connections to combinatorics, the mathematics of counting, and to computer science. Her 2013 research monograph “The maximal subgroups of the low-dimensional classical groups”, written with John Bray and Derek Holt, rapidly became a classic reference in the field.

In addition to her academic work, Colva enjoys explaining mathematics to the general public. She has appeared many times on national radio, including on 'In Our Times', has given many public lectures and written popular articles.

Colva was an undergraduate at 58勛圖 and took her PhD at Queen Mary University of London, then worked at the University of Sydney, before returning to 58勛圖 as a lecturer in 2003. She became a professor at 58勛圖 in 2018 and received an OBE in the 2024 New Years Honours list for services to education and mathematics.
