Microsoft Access: Introduction to Databases

Qualifications needed

This course presumes no prior knowledge of MS Access or database design but a familiarity with Excel would be useful.

Course information

The course is aimed at introducing users to the basic concepts of designing and creating a database in Microsoft Access and then using features relating to enhancing data entry and data output.

Introductory skills covered include:

  • basic database design
  • understanding Access database objects
  • using the Access interface
  • creating tables
  • creating basic queries

Key features relating to user interface include an introduction to:

  • creating forms for entering data more efficiently
  • generating reports to output information

(As it is a computer classroom, lunch is not provided but there will be a sufficient break to go elsewhere to either get or eat a packed lunch away from the classroom)

These courses are not open to those on Taught Postgraduate/Undergraduate programmes.

Aims and objectives

This topic is covered in two parts.
By the end of Part 1 participants will have been introduced to skills to enable them to:

  • understand what a database is and how it differs from Excel
  • understand basic principles for designing a database
  • implement a design in Access and establish relationships between tables
  • start Access and import data from a non-Access file
  • understand how a table is set up and be able to modify the table design and properties
  • create new tables and add/delete/edit records in a table
  • create both single table and multi-table queries to extract information
  • create a calculated field
  • create aggregate and parameter queries

By the end of Part 2 participants will know how to:

  • understand how forms relate to the database structure
  • create and modify a form for data entry
  • use a variety of form controls to enhance form functionality
  • create and print a report
  • use grouping and sorting features in reports
