The toy-universe I will be working with will be interpreted according to the Branching Space-Time Theory\, presented for the first time in Belnap (1992). In this sense\, I aim to show that Belnap’s Theory\, when interpreted as a strong metaphysical theory of indeterminism\, admits the construction of scenarios contravening PII. The counterexample I will be presenting will be tested against the three most famous lines of defence of the Principle\, as presented in Hawley (2009): the identity defence\, the discerning defence\, and the summing defence. It will be shown that\, unlike other alleged counterexamples to PII\, it proves successful against all these lines of defence. Proposals in conceptual engineering are not to be evaluated on the basis of their ability to track empirical essences but on the basis of a concept’s epistemic\, pragmatic\, or political merits. In the same way\, we should view membership in the category ‘work of art’ as well as subcategories such as ‘folk art’ and ‘sculpture’ not as a fact to be discovered but a decision to be made. I flesh out this core idea by describing a normativist account of aesthetic terms\, according to which our terms do not function to “pick out” properties in the world but enable speakers to convey\, endorse\, and negotiate semantic and behavioral norms. I conclude by showing how this parallel understanding of art and conceptual engineering sheds light on more general issues for conceptual engineers\, such as the role of power in the legitimization of new concepts and philosophical questions. The extent of the bias\, and the range of domains to which it applies\, has struck some as so great as to license talk of a new form of skepticism (Saul 2013). I argue that these depressing consequences are real and\, in some ways\, even more intractable than has previously been recognized. For the difficulties we face in this domain are fueled not only by illicit biases but by various other sorts of entrenched cognitive attitudes we bear toward others\, whether or not we judge them to be our peers. Inasmuch as the epistemic standing of this broader set of attitudes is itself quite dubious\, the problem of epistemic injustice turns out to be just one special case – albeit of a particularly nasty kind – from a broader domain of cases where the collaborative character of knowledge clashes with tendencies that make collaboration difficult. This makes the threat of skepticism all the greater\, and at the same time makes it harder to see what path of escape there might be. \n  URL:/philevents/event/super-special-seminar-bob-pasnau-colorado-bias-and-interpersonal-skepticism/ LOCATION:A virtual seminar by Zoom\, The University\, 58Թ\, KY16 9L\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:Super Special Seminar series ORGANIZER;CN="Stephen Read":MAILTO:arche@st-andrews.ac.uk END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20200611T130000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20200611T143000 DTSTAMP:20200611T234721Z CREATED:20200528T093551Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200611T234721Z UID:10000962-1591880400-1591885800@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Katherine Hawley. This type of sentences is found at the heart of the epistemology of logic as their truth-values tell us what follows from what. Justification holism says that beliefs regarding E-sentences can only be justified in the context of a logical theory\, e.g. classical\, intuitionistic\, paraconsistent etc. Thus\, beliefs concerning E-sentences cannot be atomistically justified as isolated claims about logical consequence\, independently of theory choice. At present there is a developing interest in and endorsement of justification holism due to the revival of a broadly abductivist approach to the epistemology of logic. This paper presents an argument against holism by proving the existence of a foundational E-sentence which is justified independently of theory choice\, i.e. a justificational fixpoint of deductive entailment. Do revolutionary analyses of familiar kinds? A standard picture of meaning — that an expression’s truth conditions are essential to it — suggests so. I present an alternative. The novel usages philosophers propose have analogues in ordinary discourse that figure in a family of puzzles about diachronic synonymy. The main obstacle to continuity of subject appears to be a kind of contingency in how we go on with a term. So\, for instance\, it might seem that if we could have properly withheld “phone” from cellphones when first invented\, “phone” has since changed its meaning. I argue that\, seen aright\, there is more than one way to go on in the same way. The meaning of\, say\, “phone” or “woman”\, does not settle how to go on\, because there is no absolute fact of the matter about what that meaning is. But\, whichever way we go on\, in hindsight\, will be going on in the same way. This talk defends the view that intensions are projected\, a version of semantic relativism. Tune in. Proponents of hyperintensional accounts of property individuation are generally led to embrace these accounts because of certain phenomena surrounding concepts like meaning\, thought\, and knowledge. For example\, we can think about a triangle being triangular without thinking about a triangle being trilateral. But critics of these accounts continue to maintain that such motivations are only the result of representational differences\, as opposed to differences in a way that the world is\, or a way that the world could be. In effect\, these critics tell us\, hyperintensional differences between properties are not real differences. The aim of this paper is to present and then closely examine an argument—call it\, ‘the Modal-Separability Argument’—that seems to underlie the rejection of treating hyperintensional differences between properties as real differences. If we were to draw on the phenomenological tradition to ask this\, we might say instead: is perceptual experience situated? If so\, in what way? Embodied theories of perception might be good candidates to answer this question\, since they claim that the body and the environment make non-trivial contributions to cognition\, broadly construed. However\, many of these embodied views have omitted this aspect of embodiment\, namely its situated aspect\, i.e. the way perceptual experience is shaped by a body that is the concrete locus of our social\, historical\, economic and cultural situation. To articulate what it would mean for perception to be situated\, I will draw on Iris Marion Young’s (1980) view on the gendered situated body. I will\, then\, do two things. Firstly\, I will discuss whether perception is\, in fact\, situated in that sense. And\, secondly\, I will discuss whether the sensorimotor approach to perception should be concerned with that aspect of perception and how the view could address it. \n  \nIf you want to join this Zoom session\, please email at si24@. Experimental philosophy is the use of scientific techniques to collect data on human reactions to central examples in philosophy. One familiar project in conceptual engineering is to address the defects in our concept of truth that cause the liar and other paradoxes by replacing our concept of truth (for certain purposes) with one or more new concepts. I outline a systematic way of identifying potential replacement concepts by using techniques from artificial intelligence. And I introduce a program of experimental philosophy studies to help evaluate which of those potential replacement concepts would be best. The idea is to break down a set of about 50 principles involving truth into the minimal inconsistent subsets and maximal consistent subsets. Then use experimental philosophy to evaluate reactions to each principle. We can use these reactions to measure the plausibility of the replacements because each maximal consistent subset corresponds to a potential replacement concept. Together\, conceptual engineering and experimental philosophy can identify the most plausible or highest credence principles involved in a defective concept and measure the overall plausibility of each potential replacement concept by the plausibility of the principles built into it.
