Accounts of hermeneutic injustice have primarily centred on the absence of necessary resources; however\, critics have highlighted cases in which the problem is a resource we do possess (ā€˜positive hermeneutic injustice’). In this talk I examine how access to an interpretive resource may be communicative and epistemically disabling. I begin by distinguishing two sorts of interpretive resource: constituents of representations and ā€˜scaffolds’ which enable us to grasp said representations. I show that scaffolding resources may enable us to grasp inaccurate representations of a target: I term these mis-interpretive resources. I then turn to consider how these mis-interpretive resources may be epistemically and communicatively disabling. Considering the role scaffolding resources enables us to explain how interpretive resources may ā€˜compete’\, meaning that a new resource may render agents less competent. Attending to scaffolding resources thus offers a richer understanding of positive hermeneutic injustice which explains details the original account fails to capture. Finally\, I note that mis-interpretive resources may give rise to particularly pernicious forms of disablement\, due to the apparent feeling of understanding they furnish one with. This conception of ideology is a response to a particular challenge for those working on social justice: Why is it that most of us\, most of the time\, act in ways that perpetuate injustice? To begin to answer this question\, I will develop an account\, inspired by Althusser among others\, that embeds ideology in social practices. Social practices enable both human and non-human animals to coordinate fluently and flexibly in response to each other and our environment; and they depend on something like a ā€œlanguageā€ – a system of signs and signals – that makes socially intelligible agency possible. I call such a framework of meaning and its material apparatus a cultural technē. I go on to argue that Grice’s distinction between natural and non-natural meaning is too coarse to provide us an account of social meaning\, and drawing on Skyrms and others working on signals\, I propose that a cultural technē is a framework or system of signs. I then consider how we might capture the publicity of social meanings in terms that don’t require complex metacognition. I conclude that account of ideology as a cultural technē ā€œgone wrongā€ provides us the basics of a critical account of ideology. Recently\, several rivals to evidentialism have been defended\, including pragmatic and moral encroachment\, epistemic partiality\, and practical and moral reasons for belief. Call these rivals ā€œimpuristā€ views. While impuirst views have both compelling cases and interesting arguments in their favor\, they also face a number of serious challenges. In this paper\, I explain three of the most important challenges to impurism. Then I argue that\, by embracing epistemic permissivism\, impurists can hold onto what’s central to their views while dealing with all three of these challenges. Finally\, I suggest that the evidentialist should also embrace permissivism\, as it helps them better respond to the most compelling considerations in favor of impurism.
