DESCRIPTION:Title:Ā Itā€™s personal and itā€™s fine \nAbstract:Ā Believing is something that one does\, or so one might say. Seeing as well. Detecting the edges of objects is not. Believing is a personal state. Seeing as well. Detecting is a sub-personal event or process. The personal/sub-personal distinction is intuitive. In recent papers\, someĀ have argued that it is problematic. I argue that it is not. Two criticisms are that it is not principled (cf. Mason Westfall) and that it potentially stifles the work of cognitive scientists by misdescribing their practices (cf. Robert Rupert.) The personal/sub-personal distinction\, as applied to states\,Ā is a special case of a distinction between the state something is in and the states its parts are in.Ā Further commitments are not necessary and only come down the line.Ā As a consequence\, one can both take it that there is such a distinction in cognitive science and that it puts no external constraint on the activity of cognitive scientists

DESCRIPTION:Justin Snedegar to lead discussion on ā€œDisagreement and Alienationā€ by Marusic and White (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/phpe.12197) \nAbstract: \nThis paper proposes to reorient the philosophical debate about peer disagreement. The problem of peer disagreement is normally seen as a problem about the extent to which disagreement provides one with evidence against oneā€™s own conclusions. It is thus regarded as a problem for individual inquiry. But things look different in more collaborative contexts. Ethical norms relevant to those contexts make a difference to the epistemology. In particular\, we argue that a norm of mutual answerability applies to us when we engage in shared inquiry with others\, and precludes us from treating one anotherā€™s conflicting judgments as evidence relevant to the dispute. From this it follows that standard philosophical accounts of peer disagreementā€”e.g.\, the Equal Weight View and the Total Evidence Viewā€”presuppose that the disagreeing parties are in a sense alienated from one another. Itā€™s doubtful that such forms of alienated disagreement should be treated as the central case.
