Proposals in conceptual engineering are not to be evaluated on the basis of their ability to track empirical essences but on the basis of a concept’s epistemic\, pragmatic\, or political merits. In the same way\, we should view membership in the category ‘work of art’ as well as subcategories such as ‘folk art’ and ‘sculpture’ not as a fact to be discovered but a decision to be made. I flesh out this core idea by describing a normativist account of aesthetic terms\, according to which our terms do not function to “pick out” properties in the world but enable speakers to convey\, endorse\, and negotiate semantic and behavioral norms. I conclude by showing how this parallel understanding of art and conceptual engineering sheds light on more general issues for conceptual engineers\, such as the role of power in the legitimization of new concepts and philosophical questions. Do revolutionary analyses of familiar kinds? A standard picture of meaning — that an expression’s truth conditions are essential to it — suggests so. I present an alternative. The novel usages philosophers propose have analogues in ordinary discourse that figure in a family of puzzles about diachronic synonymy. The main obstacle to continuity of subject appears to be a kind of contingency in how we go on with a term. So\, for instance\, it might seem that if we could have properly withheld “phone” from cellphones when first invented\, “phone” has since changed its meaning. I argue that\, seen aright\, there is more than one way to go on in the same way. The meaning of\, say\, “phone” or “woman”\, does not settle how to go on\, because there is no absolute fact of the matter about what that meaning is. But\, whichever way we go on\, in hindsight\, will be going on in the same way. This talk defends the view that intensions are projected\, a version of semantic relativism. Tune in. Experimental philosophy is the use of scientific techniques to collect data on human reactions to central examples in philosophy. One familiar project in conceptual engineering is to address the defects in our concept of truth that cause the liar and other paradoxes by replacing our concept of truth (for certain purposes) with one or more new concepts. I outline a systematic way of identifying potential replacement concepts by using techniques from artificial intelligence. And I introduce a program of experimental philosophy studies to help evaluate which of those potential replacement concepts would be best. The idea is to break down a set of about 50 principles involving truth into the minimal inconsistent subsets and maximal consistent subsets. Then use experimental philosophy to evaluate reactions to each principle. We can use these reactions to measure the plausibility of the replacements because each maximal consistent subset corresponds to a potential replacement concept. Together\, conceptual engineering and experimental philosophy can identify the most plausible or highest credence principles involved in a defective concept and measure the overall plausibility of each potential replacement concept by the plausibility of the principles built into it.
