SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar: L&M Discussion of Derek Ball’s “Definition and Dispute”
DESCRIPTION:During the next three weeks\, we will discuss material from Derek Ball’s book manuscript. \nAbstract: These are two introductory chapters from a book manuscript I’m working on\, entitled Definition and Dispute.  The first chapter introduces some main themes of the book\, and the second develops the leading idea: that the best way of making sense of a wide range of disputes\, including many philosophical disputes\, is to adopt a view on which the meanings of our words (and the contents of our thoughts) are determined in the course of inquiry\, but without change of meaning\, so that our views at the end of an inquiry play a role in determining what we meant all along.  Chapter 2 defends the view by criticising a prominent alternative — the idea that such disputes are matters of “metalinguistic negotiation” — and developing a view of definition that makes sense of what is at issue in these disputes and how we argue. \n  \nThe seminar will happen in Zoom. SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar: Talk by Maria Jimena Clavel Vazquez: “Situated embodiment and the sensorimotor approach to perception”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Are social identities relevant to perceptual experience? If we were to draw on the phenomenological tradition to ask this\, we might say instead: is perceptual experience situated? If so\, in what way? Embodied theories of perception might be good candidates to answer this question\, since they claim that the body and the environment make non-trivial contributions to cognition\, broadly construed. However\, many of these embodied views have omitted this aspect of embodiment\, namely its situated aspect\, i.e. the way perceptual experience is shaped by a body that is the concrete locus of our social\, historical\, economic and cultural situation. To articulate what it would mean for perception to be situated\, I will draw on Iris Marion Young’s (1980) view on the gendered situated body. I will\, then\, do two things. Firstly\, I will discuss whether perception is\, in fact\, situated in that sense. And\, secondly\, I will discuss whether the sensorimotor approach to perception should be concerned with that aspect of perception and how the view could address it. \n  \nIf you want to join this Zoom session\, please email at si24@.
