DESCRIPTION:2nd Annual Rights Workshop: Rights and Harm \n4th-5th June 2020\, University of 58łÔčÏ. \nOrganisers: Joseph Bowen (University of 58łÔčÏ and University of Stirling)\, Samuel Dishaw (Harvard University)\, and Daniel Muñoz (Monash University). \nIn May 2019\, the first annual Rights Workshop was held at MIT\, featuring papers by Frances Kamm\, Julia Driver\, Julia Markovits\, and Renee Jorgensen Bolinger. The was topic: “Rights and Supererogation.”  On 4th-5th June 2020\, the 2nd Rights Workshop will be held at the University of 58łÔčÏ on “Rights and Harm.” \nIn the last decade\, there has been an explosion of work on rights and duties. Equally explosive has been the literature on the metaphysics of harm and defensive harming. Yet\, these literatures on harm have not linked up with discussion of rights in a particularly explicit way. The Rights Workshop would be a chance for ethicists working on these topics to put their heads together\, share comments\, and make progress on an exciting and flourishing area of research. \nAuthors: Nicolas Cornell (Michigan)\, Helen Frowe (Stockholm)\, Kerah Gordon-Solmon (Queens\, Canada)\, Thomas Sinclair (Oxford)\, Fiona Woollard (Southampton). Respondents: Lisa Bastian (58łÔčÏ and Stirling)\, Rowan Cruft (Stirling)\, Romy Eskens (Stockholm)\, Clayton Littlejon (Kings)\, and Kieran Oberman (Edinburgh). \nThe format of the workshop is pre-read\, with papers being made available a few weeks before the workshop. Each session will begin with a critical response to one of the papers\, followed by a brief reply from the author\, and then Q&A. Newton Rayzor Sr Distinguished Professor of Philosophy\, Baylor University \nEmeritus Professor of Moral Philosophy\, University of St. Andrews \nSenior Fellow\, CEPPA \nVisiting Professor\, Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues\, University of Birmingham \n“Philosophy and Public Affairs in Historical Perspective’’\nwith introductory remarks by Professor Sally Mapstone FRSE\, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St. Andrews\n3:00 p.m. \nLive webcast on Microsoft Teams \nOpen to all; no invitation needed.  Click here to join the webcast. \n  \nAbstract: \nThe expression ‘Philosophy and Public Affairs’ like ‘Applied Philosophy’ was coined in the early 1970s to reflect a growing interest among professional philosophers in engaging practical and policy issues. That interest was the product of developments within philosophy but also of social events\, especially ones relating to personal morality\, civil rights\, foreign policy\, and warfare. CEPPA\, originally titled the ‘Centre for Philosophy and Public Affairs’ was inspired in its conception by initiatives in the US and sought to bring together philosophy and practice. The Knox lecture was an important focus of this\, and having been involved with the Centre from the outset and directed it for most of its history\, and engaged with most of the lecturers including Dworkin\, MacIntyre\, Putnam\, Rawls\, Rorty\, Skinner\, Taylor\, Warnock\, and Williams\, I will begin with a brief review of its aims and some of these contributions noting the contrast between a priori argument and historically situated reflection. This will lead to an analysis of the relation of thought to history involving ‘three degrees of historical involvement’. From that I will turn to look at the rise of casuistry in medieval thought\, giving some illustrations of enduring ‘discoveries’ about norms for action\, and then draw upon a specific concern of Aquinas about the virtues that should govern disputation bringing these to the contemporary concern with contention and disagreement\, both as a matter of theory (giving rise to the idea of ‘public reason’) and practice.
