DESCRIPTION:This is the second of three sessions\, on inferentialist semantics. Greg will be in Taiwan delivering the 2025 Wendy Huang Lectures\, and these three sessions in the M&L seminar are his opportunity to give the lectures a preliminary outing. \nI have three aims for this set of lectures. Two are central\, and the third is incidental: \n\nTo give an account of what is so distinctive about logic\, insofar as logical notions have a grip on whatever can be said or thought.\nTo clarify the connections between logic and semantics\, the theory of meaning.\nThe product of these two aims is that I get to provide a philosophical prolegomena and a non-technical introduction to the more technical work I have done in my forthcoming manuscript Proof\, Rules and Meaning.\n\nToday\, I aim to show how this inferentialist semantics applies to issues of predication\, quantification and modality\, and thereby provides some distinctive insight into ‘possible worlds’ models for quantified modal logics.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar: Yale Weiss\, “Directions in connexive logic\, past and present”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Connexive logics form a heterodox family of systems characterized by contra-classical principles of conditionality and negation including so-called Aristotle’s and Boethius’ theses. In this talk\, I survey the origins of connexive logic\, focusing on figures including Aristotle\, Chrysippus\, and Boethius\, as well as some more recent approaches\, and examine relations between them. I will argue against certain “deflationary” readings of early connexivists\, but also highlight respects in which early connexivists have sometimes been misunderstood by their modern counterparts.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar: Jonathan Schaffer\, “On What There Is\, Was\, or Could Be; Or: Modal Realism without Stares”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Plato and Pegasus do not exist\, but otherwise they have so much going for them. They are nameable\, in range of quantifiers\, and able to stand in some relations. These familiar points lead to a range of puzzles (including what Quine famously called “Plato’s beard”)\, as to how we can name\, quantifier over\, and relate to what does not exist. I propose a solution—novel as far as I know—that breaks the Quinean association between the domain and what exists in a specific way. The first ingredient is a big constant “outer” domain always including Plato\, Pegasus\, and Putin alike. The second ingredient is a semantics on which ‘exists’’ (/‘is’) is a composite of at least three distinct elements: root-exist (/root-be)\, present tense\, and indicative mood. The domain is what root-exists\, but to satisfy ‘exists’ is to root-exist in the actual present\, and thus there are things that do not exist (such as Plato and Pegasus). The end result is a system with the full domain of Lewisian modal realism\, with none of the incredulous-stare-inducing claims about there existing talking donkeys or flying horses.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar: Viviane Fairbank: Towards a Feminist Logic: Val Plumwood’s Legacy and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:This week Viviane will be leading a discussion on a paper about Val Plumwood’s feminist critique of classical negation. This will be a ‘pre-read’ discussion. The paper will be sent out with the weekly M&L email on Monday. \nTowards a Feminist Logic: Val Plumwood’s Legacy and Beyond \nBy Maureen Eckert & Charlie Donahue 2020. In Dominic Hyde\, Noneist Explorations II: The Sylvan Jungle – Volume 3 (Synthese Library\, 432). Dordrecht: pp. 424-448 \nVal Plumwood’s 1993 paper\, “The politics of reason: towards a feminist logic” (henceforth POR) attempted to set the stage for what she hoped would begin serious feminist exploration into formal logic – not merely its historical abuses\, but\, more importantly\, its potential uses. This work offers us: (1) a case for there being feminist logic; and (2) a sketch of what it should resemble. The former goal of Plumwood’s paper encourages feminist theorists to reject anti-logic feminist views. The paper’s latter aim is even more challenging. Plumwood’s critique of classical negation (and classical logic) as a logic of domination asks us to recognize that particular logical systems are weapons of oppression. Against anti-logic feminist theorists\, Plumwood argues that there are other logics besides classical logic\, such as relevant logics\, which are suited for feminist theorizing. Some logics may oppress while others may liberate. We provide details about the sources and context for her rejection of classical logic and motivation for promoting relevant logics as feminist.
