The toy-universe I will be working with will be interpreted according to the Branching Space-Time Theory\, presented for the first time in Belnap (1992). In this sense\, I aim to show that Belnap’s Theory\, when interpreted as a strong metaphysical theory of indeterminism\, admits the construction of scenarios contravening PII. The counterexample I will be presenting will be tested against the three most famous lines of defence of the Principle\, as presented in Hawley (2009): the identity defence\, the discerning defence\, and the summing defence. It will be shown that\, unlike other alleged counterexamples to PII\, it proves successful against all these lines of defence. The was topic: “Rights and Supererogation.”  On 4th-5th June 2020\, the 2nd Rights Workshop will be held at the University of 58Թ on “Rights and Harm.” \nIn the last decade\, there has been an explosion of work on rights and duties. Equally explosive has been the literature on the metaphysics of harm and defensive harming. Yet\, these literatures on harm have not linked up with discussion of rights in a particularly explicit way. The Rights Workshop would be a chance for ethicists working on these topics to put their heads together\, share comments\, and make progress on an exciting and flourishing area of research. \nAuthors: Nicolas Cornell (Michigan)\, Helen Frowe (Stockholm)\, Kerah Gordon-Solmon (Queens\, Canada)\, Thomas Sinclair (Oxford)\, Fiona Woollard (Southampton). Respondents: Lisa Bastian (58Թ and Stirling)\, Rowan Cruft (Stirling)\, Romy Eskens (Stockholm)\, Clayton Littlejon (Kings)\, and Kieran Oberman (Edinburgh). \nThe format of the workshop is pre-read\, with papers being made available a few weeks before the workshop. Each session will begin with a critical response to one of the papers\, followed by a brief reply from the author\, and then Q&A. The schedule of the workshop will be released closer to the date\, but the Workshop will begin around 10 am on Thursday 4th June and end around 1pm on Friday 5th June. Childcare facilities will be provided (please get in touch as early as possible). \nFor financial support\, we would like to thank 58Թ’s Centre for Ethics\, Philosophy and Public Affairs\, Society for Applied Philosophy\, and Scots Philosophical Association. \nAttendance is free\, but we ask that you let us know by emailing us at: sdishaw@g.harvard.edu. \n  URL:/philevents/event/right-workshop-rights-and-harms/ CATEGORIES:CEPPA,CEPPA Workshop ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:/philevents/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/CEPPA-gm2QZw.tmp_.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20200604T100000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20200604T120000 DTSTAMP:20200604T234933Z CREATED:20200528T093550Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200604T234933Z UID:10000955-1591264800-1591272000@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Super Special Seminar tba DESCRIPTION: URL:/philevents/event/super-special-seminar-tba/ LOCATION:A virtual seminar by Zoom\, The University\, 58Թ\, KY16 9L\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:Super Special Seminar series END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20200604T130000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20200604T143000 DTSTAMP:20200604T234933Z CREATED:20200528T093550Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200604T234933Z UID:10000956-1591275600-1591281000@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Jack Lyons (Glasgow): “Two Dogmas of Empirical Justification” DESCRIPTION: URL:/philevents/event/epistemology-seminar-jack-lyons-glasgow-two-dogmas-of-empirical-justification/ LOCATION:A virtual seminar by Zoom\, The University\, 58Թ\, KY16 9L\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:Epistemology Seminar END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20200605T101500 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20200605T114500 DTSTAMP:20200605T232836Z CREATED:20200528T093550Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200605T232836Z UID:10000957-1591352100-1591357500@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Medieval Logic Seminar: John Dumbleton\, Summa Logicae DESCRIPTION: URL:/philevents/event/medieval-logic-seminar-john-dumbleton-summa-logicae/ LOCATION:A virtual seminar by Zoom\, The University\, 58Թ\, KY16 9L\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:Medieval Logic Reading Group END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20200608T150000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20200608T170000 DTSTAMP:20200608T231416Z CREATED:20200528T093550Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200608T231416Z UID:10000958-1591628400-1591635600@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Metaphysics & Logic Seminar: Aybüke Özgün\, Francesco Berto\, and Aaron Cotnoir: Title: Topic-Sensitivity\, Mereology\, Topology DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The insight behind TSIM theory is that we should take at face value the view of belief\, knowledge\, (cognitive) information\, but also of other notions less explored in formal logic\, like imagination and mental simulation\, as (propositional) representational mental states bearing intentionality\, that is\, being about states of affairs\, issues\, situations\, or circumstances which make for their contents. Newton Rayzor Sr Distinguished Professor of Philosophy\, Baylor University \nEmeritus Professor of Moral Philosophy\, University of St. Andrews \nSenior Fellow\, CEPPA \nVisiting Professor\, Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues\, University of Birmingham \n“Philosophy and Public Affairs in Historical Perspective’’\nwith introductory remarks by Professor Sally Mapstone FRSE\, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St. Andrews\n3:00 p.m. \nLive webcast on Microsoft Teams \nOpen to all; no invitation needed.  Click here to join the webcast. \n  \nAbstract: \nThe expression ‘Philosophy and Public Affairs’ like ‘Applied Philosophy’ was coined in the early 1970s to reflect a growing interest among professional philosophers in engaging practical and policy issues. That interest was the product of developments within philosophy but also of social events\, especially ones relating to personal morality\, civil rights\, foreign policy\, and warfare. CEPPA\, originally titled the ‘Centre for Philosophy and Public Affairs’ was inspired in its conception by initiatives in the US and sought to bring together philosophy and practice. The Knox lecture was an important focus of this\, and having been involved with the Centre from the outset and directed it for most of its history\, and engaged with most of the lecturers including Dworkin\, MacIntyre\, Putnam\, Rawls\, Rorty\, Skinner\, Taylor\, Warnock\, and Williams\, I will begin with a brief review of its aims and some of these contributions noting the contrast between a priori argument and historically situated reflection. This will lead to an analysis of the relation of thought to history involving ‘three degrees of historical involvement’. From that I will turn to look at the rise of casuistry in medieval thought\, giving some illustrations of enduring ‘discoveries’ about norms for action\, and then draw upon a specific concern of Aquinas about the virtues that should govern disputation bringing these to the contemporary concern with contention and disagreement\, both as a matter of theory (giving rise to the idea of ‘public reason’) and practice. These historical reflections pose a question about the nature and future of liberalism. \nTo see Professor Haldane’s recent CEPPA Chat\, click here. Proposals in conceptual engineering are not to be evaluated on the basis of their ability to track empirical essences but on the basis of a concept’s epistemic\, pragmatic\, or political merits. In the same way\, we should view membership in the category ‘work of art’ as well as subcategories such as ‘folk art’ and ‘sculpture’ not as a fact to be discovered but a decision to be made. I flesh out this core idea by describing a normativist account of aesthetic terms\, according to which our terms do not function to “pick out” properties in the world but enable speakers to convey\, endorse\, and negotiate semantic and behavioral norms. I conclude by showing how this parallel understanding of art and conceptual engineering sheds light on more general issues for conceptual engineers\, such as the role of power in the legitimization of new concepts and philosophical questions. The extent of the bias\, and the range of domains to which it applies\, has struck some as so great as to license talk of a new form of skepticism (Saul 2013). I argue that these depressing consequences are real and\, in some ways\, even more intractable than has previously been recognized. For the difficulties we face in this domain are fueled not only by illicit biases but by various other sorts of entrenched cognitive attitudes we bear toward others\, whether or not we judge them to be our peers. Inasmuch as the epistemic standing of this broader set of attitudes is itself quite dubious\, the problem of epistemic injustice turns out to be just one special case – albeit of a particularly nasty kind – from a broader domain of cases where the collaborative character of knowledge clashes with tendencies that make collaboration difficult. This makes the threat of skepticism all the greater\, and at the same time makes it harder to see what path of escape there might be. \n  URL:/philevents/event/super-special-seminar-bob-pasnau-colorado-bias-and-interpersonal-skepticism/ LOCATION:A virtual seminar by Zoom\, The University\, 58Թ\, KY16 9L\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:Super Special Seminar series ORGANIZER;CN="Stephen Read":MAILTO:arche@st-andrews.ac.uk END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20200611T130000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20200611T143000 DTSTAMP:20200611T234721Z CREATED:20200528T093551Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200611T234721Z UID:10000962-1591880400-1591885800@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Katherine Hawley. This type of sentences is found at the heart of the epistemology of logic as their truth-values tell us what follows from what. Justification holism says that beliefs regarding E-sentences can only be justified in the context of a logical theory\, e.g. classical\, intuitionistic\, paraconsistent etc. Thus\, beliefs concerning E-sentences cannot be atomistically justified as isolated claims about logical consequence\, independently of theory choice. At present there is a developing interest in and endorsement of justification holism due to the revival of a broadly abductivist approach to the epistemology of logic. This paper presents an argument against holism by proving the existence of a foundational E-sentence which is justified independently of theory choice\, i.e. a justificational fixpoint of deductive entailment.
