SUMMARY:Super Special Seminar Walter Dean (Warwick) The liar and the sorites: towards a uniform arithmetical treatment
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The unification of the paradoxes of truth and vagueness has been a topic of recurrent philosophical interest (e.g. McGee 1989/1990\, Tappenden 1993\, Field 2003/2008\, Priest 1994/2010). I will present a sequence of observations which illustrate how the liar and sorites paradoxes are formally related\, culminating in the observation that both give rise to similar sorts of mathematical incompleteness phenomena. On this basis\, I will highlight the possibility of using formal undecidability in modeling semantic indeterminacy.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Classic cases of homonyms are uncontroversial: “bank” can mean a financial institution or the side of a river. However\, when we look at either of these meanings with more resolution\, the story gets blurry. “Bank” can refer to the building keeping money or the corporate institution that owns the building. In this talk\, I will explore this phenomena of multiple related meanings\, or polysemy and what lexicography can or cannot tell us about metasemantics. \nAs usual\, the seminar will take place in Edgecliffe\, room G03\, 12-2pm.

SUMMARY:Conceptual Engineering Seminar: Talk by Clotilde Torregrossa on “Experimental Aesthetics and Conceptual Engineering”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nExperimental Philosophy (X-Phi) is now a fully-fledged methodological project with applications in almost all areas of analytic philosophy\, including\, as of recently\, aesthetics. Another methodological project which has been attracting attention in the last few years is conceptual engineering (CE). Its areas of implementation are now diverse\, but as was the case initially with experimental philosophy\, aesthetics has unfortunately been left out. In this paper I argue that if conceptual engineers are interested in expanding their project to the field of aesthetics\, which would greatly benefit the field\, then they should rely on the existing experimental work of aestheticians. Instead of building a CE project in aesthetics from the ground up\, this paper explores the potential support experimental aesthetics could provide to CE\, thereby making its development more efficiently realizable. Furthermore\, I argue that doing so would be beneficial to experimental aesthetics. Currently\, the integration of X-Phi to the wider field of aesthetics is losing ground because certain objections\, predominantly the objection that X-Phi cannot be of relevance to normative questions\, have not been properly refuted. By pairing up with a normative programme like CE\, experimental aestheticians could finally put these objections to rest.

SUMMARY:Super Special Seminar Walter Dean (Warwick) On consistency and existence in mathematics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  Following the publication of his Foundations of Geometry in 1899\, David Hilbert engaged in a well-known debate with Frege which concerned (amongst other things) the question of whether the consistency of a set of axioms entails the existence of a model in which they are satisfied.   I will consider this dimension of the so-called Frege-Hilbert controversy in light of the subsequent work in logic and philosophy which it inspired.  I will argue for the following claims: i) the controversy both anticipated Gödel’s completeness theorem and shaped its reception (in which Bernays played a central role); ii) Frege was right to maintain that consistency checking is as difficult as it can be; ii) Hilbert was also right to maintain that given consistency\,  demonstrating the existence of a model is as easy as it can be.
