SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar: Talk by Jimena Clavel Vazquez: “Embodying imagination”
DESCRIPTION:Jimena Clavel Vazquez will give a talk on “Embodying imagination” (co-authored with Adriana Clavel-Vázquez) \n  \nAbstract: Traditionally\, we think of imagination as a paradigmatic case of offline cognition\, i.e. cognitive endeavors that do not directly involve real-time adaptive interactions with our surroundings. In this piece we challenge this more traditional understanding and argue for an enactive approach to imagination. We specifically focus on imaginative exercises that involve experiential imagination and argue that this enactive approach might provide a better account of certain constraints of imagination. We argue that imagination is akin to an affectively charged exploratory activity of a non-actual scenario. In our view\, previous interactions with our environment affectively attune us to respond to these scenarios in a way that leave our imaginative capacity constrained. \n  \nAs usual\, the seminar will take place in Edgecliffe\, room G03\, 12-2pm.

SUMMARY:Conceptual Engineering Seminar: Talk by Manuel Gustavo Isaac on “Broad-Spectrum Conceptual Engineering”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nConceptual engineering is aptly characterized as the method to assess and improve our representational apparatuses. But little has been said so far on how to best construe these representational apparatuses for the very purposes of conceptual engineering — in other words\, on what conceptual engineering should be all about. This paper addresses this foundational issue in conceptual engineering\, and successively defends the theses that conceptual engineering should be: (i) About concepts\, (ii) psychologically construed\, (iii) as multiply realizable functional kinds. And thereby it claims to theoretically secure and justify the maximum scope\, flexibility\, and impact for the method of conceptual engineering on our representational apparatuses in our whole cognitive life.
