DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The insight behind TSIM theory is that we should take at face value the view of belief\, knowledge\, (cognitive) information\, but also of other notions less explored in formal logic\, like imagination and mental simulation\, as (propositional) representational mental states bearing intentionality\, that is\, being about states of affairs\, issues\, situations\, or circumstances which make for their contents. I will generically call these things topics\, and provide a simple formal mereology for them. The semantics for our TSIMs will be given in a kind of conditional logic framework\, with an added mereology of topics.

Newton Rayzor Sr Distinguished Professor of Philosophy\, Baylor University \nEmeritus Professor of Moral Philosophy\, University of St. Andrews \nSenior Fellow\, CEPPA \nVisiting Professor\, Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues\, University of Birmingham \n“Philosophy and Public Affairs in Historical Perspective’’\nwith introductory remarks by Professor Sally Mapstone FRSE\, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St. Andrews\n3:00 p.m. \nLive webcast on Microsoft Teams \nOpen to all; no invitation needed.  Click here to join the webcast. \n  \nAbstract: \nThe expression ‘Philosophy and Public Affairs’ like ‘Applied Philosophy’ was coined in the early 1970s to reflect a growing interest among professional philosophers in engaging practical and policy issues. That interest was the product of developments within philosophy but also of social events\, especially ones relating to personal morality\, civil rights\, foreign policy\, and warfare. CEPPA\, originally titled the ‘Centre for Philosophy and Public Affairs’ was inspired in its conception by initiatives in the US and sought to bring together philosophy and practice. The Knox lecture was an important focus of this\, and having been involved with the Centre from the outset and directed it for most of its history\, and engaged with most of the lecturers including Dworkin\, MacIntyre\, Putnam\, Rawls\, Rorty\, Skinner\, Taylor\, Warnock\, and Williams\, I will begin with a brief review of its aims and some of these contributions noting the contrast between a priori argument and historically situated reflection. This will lead to an analysis of the relation of thought to history involving ‘three degrees of historical involvement’. From that I will turn to look at the rise of casuistry in medieval thought\, giving some illustrations of enduring ‘discoveries’ about norms for action\, and then draw upon a specific concern of Aquinas about the virtues that should govern disputation bringing these to the contemporary concern with contention and disagreement\, both as a matter of theory (giving rise to the idea of ‘public reason’) and practice. SUMMARY:Conceptual Engineering Seminar | Elizabeth Cantalamessa (Miami): “Art as conceptual engineering”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract. — In this talk I argue that our engagement in debates about art can be fruitfully understood along the same lines as debates in conceptual engineering. Proposals in conceptual engineering are not to be evaluated on the basis of their ability to track empirical essences but on the basis of a concept’s epistemic\, pragmatic\, or political merits. In the same way\, we should view membership in the category ‘work of art’ as well as subcategories such as ‘folk art’ and ‘sculpture’ not as a fact to be discovered but a decision to be made. I flesh out this core idea by describing a normativist account of aesthetic terms\, according to which our terms do not function to “pick out” properties in the world but enable speakers to convey\, endorse\, and negotiate semantic and behavioral norms. I conclude by showing how this parallel understanding of art and conceptual engineering sheds light on more general issues for conceptual engineers\, such as the role of power in the legitimization of new concepts and philosophical questions.

SUMMARY:Super Special Seminar: Bob Pasnau (Colorado) “Bias and Interpersonal Skepticism”
DESCRIPTION:Recent philosophy has paid considerable attention to the way our biases are liable to encroach upon our cognitive lives\, diminishing our capacity to know and unjustly denigrating the knowledge of others (e.g.\, Fricker 2007). The extent of the bias\, and the range of domains to which it applies\, has struck some as so great as to license talk of a new form of skepticism (Saul 2013). I argue that these depressing consequences are real and\, in some ways\, even more intractable than has previously been recognized. For the difficulties we face in this domain are fueled not only by illicit biases but by various other sorts of entrenched cognitive attitudes we bear toward others\, whether or not we judge them to be our peers. Inasmuch as the epistemic standing of this broader set of attitudes is itself quite dubious\, the problem of epistemic injustice turns out to be just one special case – albeit of a particularly nasty kind – from a broader domain of cases where the collaborative character of knowledge clashes with tendencies that make collaboration difficult. This makes the threat of skepticism all the greater\, and at the same time makes it harder to see what path of escape there might be. \n
