DESCRIPTION:Paper: Haslanger (2020)\, “How Not to Change the Subject� \nAbstract. — Concepts are not only useful for enabling individuals to have attitudes – perception\, cognition\, conation\, emotion – but for groups to coordinate with each other.  If we take seriously the coordinating function of concepts\, then although in some cases it is important that concepts connect us to a particular category or kind (water\, gold\, tiger)\, other times what’s important is how and whether they enable us to fluently coordinate (family\, gender\, democracy).  I will argue that\, as a result\, when circumstances change and fluency is disrupted\, sometimes concepts should evolve to reorient us effectively\, rather than remain rigidly fixed on a particular part of the world (or region of worlds). \n\nZoom meeting ID: 857 3025 53 80\nZoom password: ACEW20 (Invite link)\nYouTube livestream: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2KmatAi964jqA6gTSm7wbQ

DESCRIPTION:Tom Parr (University of Warwick) \n“Should We Eliminate the Child Penalty?“ \nThursday\, 17 September at 16:00 (Live on MS Teams; use this link to join the meeting) \nIn recent years\, labour market economists have learned a great deal about the extent\, causes\, and consequences of the child penalty — a term that refers to caregivers’ lower earnings in comparison with those of non-caregivers. In this talk\, I draw on the tools of moral and political philosophy to offer a novel account of the nature and extent of the associated injustice\, as well as a sketch of the appropriate response from policymakers. So long as time permits\, I will conclude with some reflections on the moral status of the gender pay gap in the light of my results.

DESCRIPTION:Applications are now open for the 3rd Annual Graduate Conference at the Centre for Ethics\, Philosophy\, and Public Affairs (CEPPA) at the University of 58³Ô¹Ï. The conference seeks to provide a platform for early career researchers working in moral and political philosophy to discuss their work in a collaborative and friendly environment. Submissions should broadly fit the theme of at least one of CEPPA’s current research projects: \n\n\n\n\n\nEffective Altruism\nExoplanet Ethics\nKnowledge\, Democracy\, and Public Discourse\n\n\n\n\nVirtue and Character\nHuman Rights\nBlame and Responsibility\nPhilosophy and Education\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to host Cecile Fabre (Oxford)\, Fabienne Peter (Warwick) and William Bülow (Stockholm Centre for the Ethics of War and Peace) as our keynote speakers. \nIf you wish to apply\, please submit a paper of no more than 4000 words along with a short abstract of no more than 200 words in PDF form to ceppa2020@st-andrews.ac.uk by February 15th\, 2020. Papers should be suitable for a presentation of approximately 30 minutes. Submissions should be prepared for blind review. We especially encourage submissions from members of underrepresented groups in philosophy. \nAll accepted papers will receive comments from faculty and postgraduate students from the 58³Ô¹Ï and Stirling Graduate Program in Philosophy (SASP) during the conference. Accepted speakers will be provided with free accommodation with a SASP graduate student in 58³Ô¹Ï.
