In this talk\, I aim to do two things. First\, I argue that there are compelling reasons for thinking that there is a property of nonexistence and that it is possibly exemplified. Thus\, Serious Actualism\, as standardly construed\, is false. Second\, I defend a neglected approach to Serious Actualism. I distinguish between a strong and a weak formulation of the view by drawing on the distinction between truth in\, and truth at\, a possible world. I argue that we should endorse only the weak formulation of Serious Actualism. This allows us to accommodate for much of what rings true about Serious Actualism without running into problems posed by properties like the property nonexistence. It is published by the American Psychiatric Association and revised by committees of psychiatrists ever fifteen years or so. This talk considers the DSM as a ‘conceptual building site’. For successful conceptual engineering to be possible we would need to be able to  (i) figure out how concepts might be defective and how they might be improved\, and (ii) bring about conceptual change. In the literature on conceptual engineering\, many seem to assume that (i) is fairly easy\, but that (ii) may be very hard. Through a discussion of the DSM revision process I argue that\, in at least some cases\, bringing about conceptual change is relatively easy\, but that figuring out how concepts might be defective and how they might be improved can be very hard. The overall aim of the talk is to help make discussions of conceptual engineering more concrete by focussing on a real life ‘conceptual building site’. \n\nZoom meeting ID: 857 3025 53 80\nZoom password: ACEW20 (Invite link) URL:/philevents/event/conceptual-engineering-seminar-tba-8/ LOCATION:A virtual seminar by Zoom\, The University\, 58Թ\, KY16 9L\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:Conceptual Engineering Seminar END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20201104T130000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20201104T140000 DTSTAMP:20201104T224005Z CREATED:20200820T172140Z LAST-MODIFIED:20201104T224005Z UID:10001205-1604494800-1604498400@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Climate Crisis: Catherine Jones (IR) and Sam Woolhead (Transition) DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the StAIGS Internal Speaker Series. The topic for 4 November is Climate Crisis\, and our speakers will be Catherine Jones (IR) and Samuel Woolhead (Transition).\n \nThe format for the Internal Speaker Series is a “brown bag” lunch seminar\, of approximately an hour\, from 1 to 2 pm\, now held on Teams. (Feel free to come and eat your lunch.)\n \nStAIGS’ Internal Speaker Series has two staff members from different departments across the university who will present on a single topic for about 15 minutes each\, and then there are 30 minutes for questions and discussion. This is a casual event to get to know more about colleagues’ work at the University of 58Թ.
