Essentialism and potentialism have much in common\, but little has been said about their relation to each other. The aim of my talk is to better understand the relations between essence and potentiality\, on the one hand\, and between essentialism and potentialism\, on the other. It is argued\, first\, that essence and potentiality are not duals but interestingly linked by a weaker relation dubbed ‘semi-duality’; second\, that given this weaker relation\, essentialism and potentialism are not natural allies but rather natural competitors; and third\, that the semi-duality of essence and potentiality allows the potentialist to respond to an important explanatory challenge by using essentialist resources without thereby committing to essentialism. It argues against the view that sees presuppositions as an indirect counterpart of the direct speech act of assertion and proposes instead that they are much more similar to the direct speech act of assumption. More concretely\, it suggests that the norm that governs presuppositions is not an epistemic or doxastic attitude such as knowledge\, justified belief\, or mere belief; it’s a practical attitude\, most plausibly the attitude of rational acceptance. This view has important ramifications well beyond debates in philosophy of language and linguistics. It affects not only our view of which speech act sequences are fine and which are off; it bears on whether presuppositions can function as testimony\, whether they can be lies\, and whether they are ontologically committal\, thus addressing central topics in epistemology\, ethics\, and metaphysics. Should we regard the technical notions these formalisms define as engineered concepts? In this talk I will present a critical view of the feasibility of conceptual engineering in logic and foundations of mathematics\, drawing on a few key examples: the concept of “model\,” which emerged slowly and under significant internal pressures; the concept of computability\, and from my own work the concept of formalism independence/formalism freeness. The view taken here is that foundational formalisms such as these are not tracking conceptual change so much as invariant conceptual content. Time permitting\, we venture into the sociology of mathematics as it bears on the control problem. Mathematicians are often resistant to new concepts (especially those coming from foundations). The bar may be set too high for conceptual engineering projects in mathematics if such projects do not deliver on conventional factors such as simplification (the complex number proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra)\, establishing deep connections between mathematical subdisciplines (Hrushovski’s application of model-theoretic concepts to the Mordell-Lang Conjecture)\, the ability to prove new theorems (projective determinacy vis a vis regularity properties of the reals). \n\nZoom meeting ID: 857 3025 53 80\nZoom password: ACEW20 (Invite link) URL:/philevents/event/conceptual-engineering-seminar-tba-9/ LOCATION:A virtual seminar by Zoom\, The University\, 58Թ\, KY16 9L\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:Conceptual Engineering Seminar END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20201111T130000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20201111T140000 DTSTAMP:20201111T161315Z CREATED:20200823T180649Z LAST-MODIFIED:20201111T161315Z UID:10001217-1605099600-1605103200@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Moral Philosophy Reading Group DESCRIPTION: URL:/philevents/event/moral-philosophy-reading-group-49/ ORGANIZER;CN="Ben Sachs":MAILTO:bas7@st-andrews.ac.uk END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20201111T140000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20201111T160000 DTSTAMP:20201111T231705Z CREATED:20200820T172140Z LAST-MODIFIED:20201111T231705Z UID:10001207-1605103200-1605110400@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy & Social Theory Seminar DESCRIPTION: URL:/philevents/event/feminist-philosophy-social-theory-seminar-8/ END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20201112T100000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20201112T120000 DTSTAMP:20201112T161346Z CREATED:20200818T202304Z LAST-MODIFIED:20201112T161346Z UID:10001049-1605175200-1605182400@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Super Special Seminar tba DESCRIPTION: URL:/philevents/event/super-special-seminar-tba-13/ LOCATION:A virtual seminar by Zoom\, The University\, 58Թ\, KY16 9L\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:Super Special Seminar series END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20201112T130000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20201112T143000 DTSTAMP:20201112T161347Z CREATED:20200818T202304Z LAST-MODIFIED:20201112T161347Z UID:10001050-1605186000-1605191400@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar. Contemporary democracy faces problems that have their source in otherwise laudable forms of political participation. In short\, enactments of democratic citizenship heighten our exposure to polarization\, which in turn erodes our capacities to perform well as citizens. This talk examines the phenomenon of polarization\, identifies the problem that polarization poses to democracy\, and proposes a strategy for addressing that problem. Perhaps surprisingly\, if we aim to nurture our democratic capacities\, we need to sometimes engage together in nonpolitical cooperative activities.
