Korman argues in favour of conservatism in metaphysics\, that is\, very roughly\, that what we ordinarily take there to be is true. Especially\, we are right about how many objects there are and what these objects are supposed to be. Korman takes conservatism to be opposed both to permissivism\, according to which there is much more than we ordinarily take there to be\, and eliminativism\, according to which\, there is nothing of (or much less than) we ordinarily take there to be. Korman’s master conservative defence relies on what he calls the “arguments from counterexamples” plus an epistemic “theory of apprehension”. In this talk\, I’ll show that his defensive line is ineffective and that permissivism – at least the version of it I favour – can be vindicated. I take ‘natural’ kinds in a broadly naturalist way\, seeing a continuity between philosophical thinking and empirical inquiry in the natural sciences. This naturalist take on natural kinds recognizes that an important part of good scientific research is continual work of conceptual engineering\, always seeking to craft concepts that facilitate understanding and inquiry most effectively. Such a revision of concepts is an important part of scientific progress. This perspective on concepts complements Dewey’s pragmatist view of methodology\, according to which all rules are subject to ongoing empirical evaluation and revision. These ideas will be illustrated through several examples of conceptual development from the history of science\, concerning some basic concepts such as temperature\, acidity\, and chemical elements. \nZOOM INFO \n\nMeeting ID: 892 5895 0975\nPassword: ACEW21\nInvite link: here URL:/philevents/event/conceptual-engineering-seminar-tba-22/ LOCATION:A virtual seminar by Zoom\, The University\, 58Թ\, KY16 9L\, United Kingdom END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20210526T110000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20210526T123000 DTSTAMP:20200819T154433Z CREATED:20200819T112815Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200819T154433Z UID:10001067-1622026800-1622032200@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:Moral Philosophy Reading Group DESCRIPTION: URL:/philevents/event/moral-philosophy-reading-group-27/ ORGANIZER;CN="Ben Sachs":MAILTO:bas7@st-andrews.ac.uk END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20210526T160000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20210526T173000 DTSTAMP:20210526T111929Z CREATED:20200819T112737Z LAST-MODIFIED:20210526T111929Z UID:10001063-1622044800-1622050200@www.st-andrews.ac.uk SUMMARY:CEPPA Talk – Jonathan Quong (University of Southern California) DESCRIPTION:Title: The Permissibility of Lesser Evil \nAbstract: \nFlood:   Flood water is headed toward a cave where five innocent people are trapped and will be killed if the water reaches them. The water can be diverted into a mineshaft\, but innocent Betty is trapped in the mineshaft and will be killed if the water is redirected. Albert is a bystander who has seen and understood the whole situation\, and he stands next to a switch that can divert the flood. He can easily flip the switch. \nWhen considering cases like this\, some people believe that Albert is morally required to save the five at the cost of Betty’s life (the requirement thesis). Others believe that Albert is permitted but not required to save the five (the permissive thesis). I argue in favor of the permissive thesis and against the requirement thesis. I conclude by considering some further implications for the ethics of self-defense and war. It is controversial whether rights of this kind are intelligible\, or precisely what their basis is. This talk aims to get clearer on what a “right to be believed” is a right to by working backward: sifting through the various ways of characterizing the justifications we might give for such an entitlement\, and the wrongs suffered when it is violated. I suggest that the best candidate is a claim to appropriate epistemic policies\, which I unpack and sketch at the end of the talk.
