DESCRIPTION:The Inferentialism Reading group is running over the first three seminars of this semester of M&L. \nOn April 15th\, Viviane Fairbank will be leading a discussion on Julien Murzi & Florian Steinbergerā€™s ā€œInferentialismā€œ. \nOn April 22nd\, Harry Vincent will be leading a discussion Ladislav Koreňā€™s ā€œPropositional Contents and the Logical Spaceā€œ. \nOn April 29th\, Greg Restall will be leading a discussion Hans-Johann Glockā€™s ā€œWhy Rules Ought to Matterā€œ. \nThese sessions will be run as ā€˜pre-readā€™ discussions\, and participants will be expected to have read the paper ahead of the seminar. \nInferentialism \nBy Murzi\, J. and Steinberger\, F. (2017). Inferentialism. In A Companion to the Philosophy of Language (eds B. Hale\, C. Wright and A. Miller). https://doi.org/10.1002/9781118972090.ch9 \nThis chapter introduces inferential role semantics (IRS) and some of the challenges it faces. It also introduces inferentialism and places it into the wider context of contemporary philosophy of language. The chapter focuses on what is standardly considered both the most important test case for and the most natural application of IRS: logical inferentialism\, the view that the meanings of the logical expressions are fully determined by the basic rules for their correct use\, and that to understand a logical expression is to use it in accordance with the appropriate rules. It discusses some of the benefits of logical inferentialism\, chiefly with regard to the epistemology of logic\, and considers a number of objections. The chapter critically examines Robert Brandomā€™s inferentialism about linguistic and conceptual content in general. Finally\, it considers a number of general objections to IRS and possible responses on the inferentialistā€™s behalf.

DESCRIPTION:MPRG withĀ Giuli Cavaliere:\nChapter Title: ā€˜Rescue\, Aid\, and the Challenge from Adoptionā€™\n\nChapter Abstract: This paper examines and responds to two versions of what I refer to as the challenge from adoption. According to the first\, those who wish to have children are morally required to adopt existing children in need rather than procreate. According to the second\, the state ought not to support fertility services\, since doing so may reduce the adoption prospects of children in institutional care. I argue that neither version succeeds. In response to the first\, I show that\, under current non-ideal conditions\, adoption is not analogous to cases of easy rescue: the very features that give rise to a putative duty to adopt also make adoption exceedingly demanding in ways that the argument for such a duty cannot adequately accommodate. Under ideal conditions\, where these costs are set aside\, the deontic framework relied on by proponents of the duty to adopt remains ill-suited to appraising practices such as procreation\, parenthood\, and adoption\, because it obscures their distinctive value and flattens the moral landscape. In response to the second\, I argue that institutional duties towards children require that they be protected and supported\, but not that the state secures the best possible outcome through adoption.\nLocation: Edgecliffe 104

DESCRIPTION:Title:Ā Conflated Questions in the Ethics of Belief \nAbstract: Itā€™s common to suppose that epistemology can be understood in close structural parallel with ethics: as ethics is about what to do\, epistemology is about what to believe. In this paper I draw attention to an important limit of such parallelisms: in reasoning to belief\, agents are concerned in the first instance not with what to believe but with the uniquely theoretical question of what is the case. I demonstrate the relevance this distinction in questions has for the debate between pragmatists and evidentialists in the ethics of belief\, and I suggest a compromise that I expect no one to like. \n\nLocation: Edgecliffe G03 and online on teams
