Ultimately, I demonstrate that, at times, when a situation calls for accountability for a serious wrongdoing in the U.S. one can find oneself trapped in a “now” that has been constructed by 1) ineffective carceral imaginations, 2) insufficient structural options for accountability, and 3) inadequate lexicons of permissibility. I conclude by suggesting key questions for exploration in the U.S. carceral state are: what are the communities we want to build with the accountability options on which we rely?
