Fees and financial information

Before you arrive, you will need to set up payment for your tuition and accommodation fees as part of the matriculation process. You may also be interested in looking into any scholarships or funding opportunities.

You should also consider other expenses you may encounter while living abroad, and whether you wish to open a bank account while living in Scotland.

Programme fees

The fees for our undergraduate international study abroad programme has been set as follows. Postgraduate applicants should read on and refer to the 'Postgraduate study abroad students' section of this article.

If applicable, you must pay any programme fees by the deadline. You will not become a fully registered student until you have paid your fees in full or set up an instalment plan using one of the following methods

payment in full
payment by instalments - 50% (international or UK bank transfer)
credit or debit card agreements
letter from sponsor confirming your programme fees will be covered by them. If you are applying from a partner institution, your fees records will be automatically updated and you do not need to send a sponsor confirmation letter.

Where a student’s programme at the University of 58吃瓜 is sponsored by a partner institution or provider, the partner or provider will be liable for payment of the programme fee.

Study abroad students admitted to taught postgraduate programmes for one semester will be liable for the appropriate pro rata home or overseas fee of the relevant taught postgraduate programme. See the course page for your programme for fees information.

Postgraduate accommodation fees

If you are accepted to stay at one of the University’s hall of residence, you will need to pay for your accommodation fees during your studies at 58吃瓜.

Where a student’s accommodation at the University of 58吃瓜 is sponsored by a partner institution or provider, the partner or provider will be liable for payment of the accommodation fees.
The Global Office at the University of St鈥疉ndrews offers two scholarships for inbound study abroad and exchange students.

The Inbound Study Abroad Scholarship provides several awards of up to £4,000, which must be used towards either university accommodation or tuition fees.

Launching ahead of the 2026/27 academic year, the Patti Schmid Scholarship offers £2,000 per semester, or £4,000 for a full academic year, to one inbound study abroad or exchange student. This scholarship seeks to honour Patti Schmid’s legacy by supporting students undertaking a semester or year-long study abroad experience at 58吃瓜. Awarded on the basis of financial need, it enables recipients to pursue similarly transformative opportunities while reflecting the values that defined Patti’s life, including curiosity, a zest for life, a love of learning, and a commitment to cultural understanding. The Patti Schmid Scholarship will open for applications at a later date. We encourage students to check the scholarship application portal and follow our Instagram channel to stay informed of announcements.

Eligibility criteria
- Scholarships are open to all incoming undergraduate visiting students in the Faculty of Arts, Divinity and Science, regardless of fee status, who are participating in the Global Office’s Study Abroad and Exchange programmes at 58吃瓜.
- Applicants will be asked to demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need.
- There are separate application cycles and deadlines for students commencing their studies in either semester (i.e. September and January).
Applications ahead of Semester 1, September 2026 entry is now open. All eligible candidates to have applied to the exchange and study abroad programme by 2 June 2026 will receive an email with more information. The deadline for scholarship applications will be 11.59pm (UK time) on 22 June 2026.

Scholarship requirements
- Personal statement of no more than 500 words outlining your interest and reasoning for applying for the scholarship. Applicants should demonstrate financial need and academic excellence.
- A letter of support from your home Institution such as an academic reference letter outlining your academic abilities and character. You cannot re-use the reference submitted as part of your Study Abroad or Exchange application. The letter of support must be unique to your Scholarship application.
- Students must disclose total annual household income. This includes income from parents, guardians, or any other contributors. You must disclose details of other awards or grants as part of the application form.
- Scholarship students will be asked to provide a written account of their overseas experiences for social media.
- Applicants must upload all supporting documents by the advertised deadline. We cannot accept applications and supporting documents by email.
Application guidance
- The University’s scholarship webpages contain information and video tutorials on how to search for funding opportunities and how to submit an application. These can be accessed through the application portal (or through MySaint for current students). Please review the guidance provided before contacting the Global Office.
- Once the deadline for applications has passed, a panel will review all completed applications and make decisions based on the criteria outlined in the requirements section above, including personal statements, reference letters, and financial information provided.
- Applicants may be asked to provide further information where details are incomplete, or where evidence or clarification is required.
- The Global Office aims to communicate decisions with applicants via email within four weeks of the application deadline. Note, we cannot provide feedback on your application.

Other expenses

There are a number of expenses that are not covered by tuition fees, and all students will be liable for these as appropriate. Such expenses may include field trip costs, Music Centre and Sports Centre memberships, and photocopying costs.

As an international student, you should also consider travel and tourist destination costs, as well as general living costs such as food and clothing.
Banking

Bank services and accounts vary across the world, so do try and speak to students who have already studied in 58吃瓜 to find out about the banking situation and how they set up an account here.

You may be best to keep using a card from your home country that charges low/no withdrawal fees. There are also a number of mobile app based solutions that may be more suitable for your needs such as Monzo and Curve.

Most banks will provide overseas students with a basic account when they are in the UK. However, if you are here for six months or less your options may be more limited.

If you are allowed to open an account, it will be a basic bank account. This will mean you will be able to:
- access cash via a cash machine.
- set up direct debits or standing orders.
You should choose a bank which has a branch in 58吃瓜 which can be more convenient for certain transactions such as transferring funds.
