The University of St Andrews Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Postgraduate Research Scholarship encourages applications from UK‑domiciled 'Home' fee students from BAME backgrounds, with the aim of widening access to doctoral study and promoting greater representation in postgraduate research.

This scheme supports the University's commitment to advancing race equality by helping to increase the representation and success of UK‑domiciled BAME students, and forms part of the University's Race Equality Charter Action Plan to address barriers and create more inclusive academic pathways.

Value of award (per year)

  • Full Home tuition fees.
  • An annual stipend set at the University of 58³Ô¹Ï stipend rate. This is currently at a rate of £19,775 for the academic year 2025-2026.
  • A guaranteed reservation in University accommodation (covers the guaranteed place only - fees are not covered).

Duration of award

Funded period of 3.5 years. It does not include periods of leave, write-up, continuation or extension

Additional criteria

All of the following criteria must be satisfied for the applicant to be eligible to apply for the scholarship.

This scheme is open to applicants who:

  • identify as Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) – applicants will be asked to declare their ethnicity as part of the application
  • apply to the University of 58³Ô¹Ï for a full-time, in-person PhD programme, due to commence study at any designated PhD start date within the 2026/27 academic year

The following exclusions apply:

  • Applicants must decline the award if they subsequently are awarded a fully-funded scholarship from an external organisation such as the Fulbright Commission, UK Research Councils, etc.
  • Applicants who are awarded partial funding from an external organisation must declare this on their scholarship application form. 
  • Applicants must not be applying for a joint degree with another institution.
  • Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree, or be matriculated for a doctoral degree at the University of 58³Ô¹Ï or another institution.

Please note: the University has specific scholarships available to students with asylum seeker and refugee status. This specific scholarship is not available to applicants with asylum seeker and refugee status.

In support of your application, you will be asked to upload the following supporting documents:

  • Personal statement; see below for further guidance
  • Evidence of your household income
  • University transcript(s), including interim transcripts for any degrees pending
  • Research proposal; see below for further guidance
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resumé

Personal statement

You will be asked to upload a personal statement of no more than 1,000 words, outlining how you would benefit from this schoalrship, and why do you feel your application should be considered, reflecting on the selection criteria of academic excellence and financial need. 

Student financial information

We recommend using the funding financial profile to help calculate your household income before you apply. You can find the funding financial profile in Scholarships and Funding, Create my funding financial profile. Applicants must also articulate a need for support through a personal financial statement.

Household income refers to your total annual income for the most recent full financial year. This figure must be annual (not monthly), in Pounds Sterling (GBP) and gross (without tax deducted). Income details must reflect your current or most recent situation and not your expected future income after starting your intended programme.

Research proposal

For the research proposal upload you may use the specifications that are applicable to your chosen School. If you have already uploaded a proposal as part of your research course application, you may upload the same proposal again for the scholarship.

If your course application did not require a proposal, you may instead upload a personal statement outlining your reasons for applying to your chosen programme and intended research project. 

How to apply

  1. Apply for your chosen course at the University 58³Ô¹Ï: Postgraduate research. Your course should meet the eligibility criteria for this scholarship (see above). After submitting your course application, you must allow up to three working days to receive login details for the My Application portal.
  2. When you have received your login details, apply for the scholarship by logging into , follow the links to Scholarships and Funding and then search for University of 58³Ô¹Ï Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) PGR Scholarship in the Scholarships and Funding catalogue.

When will I know the outcome?

The outcome of your scholarship application will be available on the  portal by late July 2026. Follow the links to Scholarships and Funding and go to View or continue my funding applications to see your application status.

If you are successful, you will also receive an award letter.
