The University of 58³Ô¹Ï and The National Gallery, London, are offering a fully funded four‑year (CDP) beginning in September 2026 through the AHRC’s (CDP) scheme.

Drawing on the newly acquired Archive, a rich and underexplored resource that has shaped the British art world since the magazine’s foundation in 1903, the project invites a doctoral researcher to develop an original study of twentieth‑century British art history, with scope to explore themes such as the history of art history, the art market, museum practice, and the evolution of art publishing.

Value of award (per year)

  • Full tuition fees covered for the duration of the studentship (both Home and International)
  • Annual stipend at UKRI rates (£21,805 for 2026–27)
  • £600 per year CDP maintenance payment

There is also the potential to receive a further £1,000 per year (for all four years) from the National Gallery to support travel and project‑related expenses, subject to additional terms and conditions.

Duration of award

The funding duration is up to 4 years for full-time and 8 years for part-time postgraduate study.

You can only apply for this scholarship if your programme start date is September 2026; no other 2026–27 entry points are eligible for funding.

As part of the application process, you must submit:

A short research proposal (500–1,000 words)

  • Outline your approach to the topic
  • Highlight specific areas of interest within the call

A personal statement (around 300 words)

Important: Please use the same research proposal and the same supporting details for both the PhD application and the scholarship application.

Scholarship application review process

Applications for this scholarship will be evaluated through a two-stage review process:

  1. Application Review
    In the first stage, an academic school panel will assess all applications and shortlist candidates for interview.

  2. Interview Panel
    In the second stage, the shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by a panel made up of colleagues from the School of Art History. This panel will decide on the final awardee.
