Module description

This module traces the history of European and American photography during the first part of the twentieth century. Through a consideration of aesthetics, theoretical issues and technical features in tandem with their social and political context, key aspects of photographic practice will be examined, such as: the role of the photograph as art or document; portrait, fashion, advertising and press photography; the photobook; modernist and avant-garde photographic aesthetics (such as New Vision, Surrealism); the practice of women photographers and the representation of gender and sexuality; photography exhibitions; family, snapshot and anonymous photography.

Coursework = 100% (including Time Restricted Visual Analysis Test = 35%)
