Module description

This module will examine the art and material culture of Christian devotion in Europe from c. 1100 to the Reformation. From bejewelled reliquaries to luxury textiles and cheap pilgrim souvenirs, students will learn about the objects that facilitated religious practice and those that were themselves the subject of veneration. Object-focused analysis will be supplemented through the study of primary sources, such as wills, hagiographies, and inventories. At the end of the module, students will be able to articulate the power of materials to the medieval mind and identify the political, economic, and social systems in which devotional objects functioned.
