Module description

Few figures loom as large in the history of Western art as Leonardo da Vinci, the artist who, in many regards, shaped the notion of 聶genius聶 we have inherited. Works of art such as the "Mona Lisa" or the "Vitruvian Man" are so iconic that it is easy to assume there is nothing new to tell about them. Yet the constant outpouring of new studies, exhibitions and documentaries speaks to the tremendous fascination the artist-scientist still holds, five hundred years after his death. This module not only seeks to reassess what we know and do not know today about Leonardo but also invites students to think critically about the discipline of art history, the publishing and exhibition industry, the art market, and the relationship between academia and popular culture.
