Module description

This module will examine the relationship between British Theatre and Visual Culture from 1740 to 1880, paying particular attention to the interplay between Art and Theatre as both a source and an inspiration. Various forms of media, including painting, photography, architecture, printmaking, posters, and other ephemera, will be explored. The module will also provide a comprehensive exploration of the different artistic movements and new developments that emerged during this period, such as the new genre of theatre portraiture, Black theatre history, Romanticism, and Classicism in painting and architecture. These movements and developments will be examined in relation to their overall impact on British theatre. Furthermore, the module will delve into relevant themes and subjects, and it will explore a wide range of critical and theoretical texts.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Research a topic, making intelligent use of the resources provided by the Visual Resources Library, the University Library and MMS.
  • Present information, ideas and arguments clearly in both written and spoken form, using visual aids, working to deadlines and participate constructively in group discussion.
  • Evaluate and interpret evidence from a range of primary and secondary sources.
  • Be confident in their knowledge of the history of British Theatre and Visual Culture during the period 1740-1880 which is crucial to understanding the art produced today.
  • Understand the essential critical, theoretical, social, political, and cultural issues relating to British Theatre and Visual Culture 1740-1880.
  • Use skills of observation and analysis to critically discuss works of art from this period, speak and write clearly about related concepts, issues and contexts.
