Module description

This module examines the lived experience of women in ancient Mediterranean societies. Drawing on recent scholarship which has discovered new avenues to reconstruct ancient lives, from bioarchaeology and dietary isotope studies to studies of embodiment and the gendered use of space, the module will examine female experience across different cultures (Near Eastern, Greek, Etruscan and Roman) and between social classes. Topics to be studied will include the archaeology of women, experiences of childhood and constructions of the female body, social relationships, work and labour, women’s place in the urban and domestic environments, and the relationship between women and the ancient state.
