Module description
This module provides a grounding in Chinese language and cultural history. Students will learn to speak the language with accurate pronunciation and tones, as well as to recognise and to reproduce in writing around 300 characters and around 600 words. This module is designed for those with little or no background in Chinese.

IN TAKING THIS MODULE YOU MUST NOT HAVE HIGHER OR A-LEVEL CHINESE OR EQUIVALENT OR BE A NATIVE SPEAKER OF CHINESE.

Intended learning outcomes
- students will be able to recognise and reproduce in writing around 300 characters / 600 words and will have thorough knowledge of the pinyin romanization system, as well as familiarity with all common stroke order rules for writing Chinese characters.
- By the end of the module, students will be able to effectively communicate in Modern Standard Chinese using simple sentences.
- By the end of the module, students will be able to write and understand simple written sentences
- By the end of the module, students will be acquainted with cultural history and practices in China and Chinese-speaking regions in the first half of the twentieth century.
