The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Availability restrictions

This module is restricted to students taking pursuing a Chinese Studies joint degree, and students studying Chinese as a third subject if they meet the requisites.

Module description

This module allows students to develop their existing communicative and written competence in Chinese language and to broaden their knowledge of China’s cultural history. Students will learn to become accurate in their use of the spoken language, and focus on acquiring a solid ability in reading and writing traditional characters; they will gain confidence in reading material written for native speakers of the language (e.g. news reports, poetry, academic writing), and will also develop intermediate written composition skills.

Pre-requisites

TO TAKE THIS MODULE, APPLICANTS MUST HAVE RECENTLY OBTAINED ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS IN CHINESE LANGUAGE: SCOTTISH ADVANCED HIGHERS, A-LEVEL, CAMBRIDGE PRE-U, IB, OR HAVE AN EQUIVALENT LEVEL OF PRIOR CHINESE LANGUAGE STUDY.

IN TAKING THIS MODULE, STUDENTS CANNOT TAKE CN1011.

Intended learning outcomes

  • By the end of this module, students will be able to read and write c. 600 characters and 1200 words.
  • Be able to hold a simple conversation in correctly articulated Mandarin Chinese on day-to-day life and routine tasks and given their opinion on a range of everyday topics.
  • Be able to read and understand information from basic texts on everyday life from a variety of sources, and accurately write about everyday topics using simple sentences.
  • Be able to read, understand and analyse level-appropriate Chinese-language cultural texts from the early twentieth century
  • Have a broad understanding of the major historical and cultural events in the first half of the twentieth century in China.
