Module description
Students will continue to acquire Chinese characters (1200 characters and 3,000 words) while studying more complex texts and enhancing their spoken language skills. The cultural content of this module will explore issues in contemporary China and the rest of the Chinese-speaking world from a range of cultural perspectives. Documentary films, works of popular music and viral videos will be studied alongside online poetry, art installations and blog entries in order to better understand some core issues in contemporary Chinese culture from 1989 to the present day.

Intended learning outcomes
- By the end of the module, students will recognise and use c. 1200 characters or 3,000 frequently used Chinese words or phrases
- Students will be able to have short conversations on every day and socio-cultural issues using correct structures and sentence patterns frequently used in Mandarin.
- Students will be able to read and comprehend short articles and write longer passages in Chinese on topics covered in the module.
- Students will be able to read, understand and analyse more level-appropriate key cultural texts in Chinese from the 20th and 21st centuries
- Students will have a deeper understanding of key themes that run through modern Chinese culture and be able to discuss and analyse key texts, film and art related to them.
