Module description

The objective of the module is language learning and cultural familiarisation through an approved study or work placement in a Chinese-speaking country. Study placements will be as students at Foreign Language departments in universities or language schools. Students are responsible for identifying work placements in line with their needs and interests, which must be proposed to the department for approval subject to feasibility and risk assessment. Guidance will be provided; however, placements cannot be guaranteed by the department. Formal learning and assessment will occur across semesters through: (i) Two short written assignments in Chinese totalling 500 characters. (ii) Three written assignments in Chinese totalling 2500 characters on topics chosen in consultation with the module co-ordinator. (iii) A 10-minute oral examination in Chinese upon the student’s return to 58³Ô¹Ï after the WIYA year, during which the year abroad experience will be presented and discussed.
