Module description

This module investigates the extent to which literature can give us knowledge about other people, especially people of a different class, race, or ethnicity. How do writers attempt to portray experiences of alterity, and how does literature signal its own capacities and limitations in providing this kind of knowledge? Why do some texts seem to evoke optimism, and others scepticism, that depicting those of diverse racial or social backgrounds might lead to transitive social change? The module will also discuss literature about otherness in comparative contexts, when these texts cross geographic or linguistic borders. How do creative practitioners in one cultural context draw upon works of art originating in a completely different cultural context, in order to explore issues of class, race, and intersectionality? Students will examine a variety of genres to examine diverse formal strategies for conveying the experience of alterity, oppression, and resistance.
