Module description

C.S. Lewis is one of the extraordinary Christian writers of the 20th century, crafting works of keen intelligence, exuberant imagination, and clear-eyed social and psychological analysis which are rightly taking their place in the theological and literary canon. What makes these books and essays so exciting and resilient is their interweaving – sometimes mutually upbuilding and illuminating, sometimes in creative tension – of reason and imagination. It is this interplay, particularly the many ways in which Lewis understood and used ‘imagination’, that will be at the heart of our course. In this module, we will read works from across his corpus, as well as texts by J.R.R. Tolkien and other members of the literary circle known as the Inklings, discussing their theological and philosophical thought as well as the importance of the ways in which they chose to write.
