Module description

In this module, students will explore learning, engagement and exhibitions in museums through the lens of the experiences that they enable visitors to have in museums. The module will establish the importance of engaging audiences in concepts, collections and spaces. It will ground students in the theory of learning and engagement in museums – from why different mechanisms for engaging different audiences are important, to how museums can enhance learning in schools, and how being bold and experimentation can bring new audiences on side. It will then bring theory in line with practice, and investigate the practicalities of engaging audiences in museums. It will consider legislative frameworks, internal organisational policies and the ethics of museum practice in conjunction with practical considerations like risk assessments, safeguarding and accessibility.
