Module description

With its dual focus on the Adenauer Era (1949-1963) in the FRG and the Stalinist/Post-Stalinist era (1949-1961) in the GDR, this module will explore the importance of this period for an understanding of German-German history and politics during the Cold War. While the first half of the module focuses on films produced during the long 1950s, the second half considers how this period is refracted through the lens of filmmakers working in the two German states during the 1970s and early 1980s. By considering post-war German cinema from three critical perspectives (genre, gender and stardom) the module will suggest ways in which the cinemas of East and West Germany – often regarded as two distinct entities – can be put in dialogue with each other.
