SCOTCAT credits

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Module description

This module equips students with essential skills for effective communication in academic contexts. It focuses on developing both listening and speaking competencies required for successful participation in higher education settings. Students will engage with a range of academic discourses, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, and presentations. Allowing students to evidence their speaking and listening abilities in a wide range of subject areas.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Give clear descriptions, express viewpoints and develop arguments, without much conspicuous searching for words, using some complex sentence forms.
  • Obtain, organise and use factual or theoretical information for describing, comparing and contrasting processes, problems and solutions and explaining a viewpoint.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in the use of language and structures for oral communication in an academic context i.e. seminars and presentations.
  • Demonstrate ability to understand the main ideas, points of view, and key details of academic and professional presentations that are both propositionally and linguistically complex, provided they are delivered in standard spoken language and the topic is familiar.
