Module description
The reign of Richard II king of England represented a period of challenge and crisis which culminated in the king’s overthrow in 1399. The aftermath of this revolution witnessed a series of rebellions by great nobles and the last attempt to resurrect a native Welsh monarchy under Owain Glyndŵr. These years were ones in which the concept and symbolism of royal power, the right of subjects to counsel and resist their rulers, and ideas of nation and communal identity were reevaluated. This module will examine politics and society in England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland in this revolutionary era, balancing themes and events to capture its defining features. The focus will shift between royal courts and parliament in England and Scotland, expressions of chivalry via tournaments and in warfare on the Anglo-Scottish border, and the clashes of cultural and political values displayed in Richard II’s expeditions to Ireland.
