Module description
This module surveys the Middle Ages in Europe from the Age of the Crusades to Age of Columbus, a key period for the emergence and rise of European civilization(s) in a recognizable form. Surveying core political, cultural and economic developments and themes, and using primary sources taken from the period itself, possible tutorial topics relate to Crusading, trade, cultural encounters, monasticism, the impact of the Mongols, the Black Death, Renaissance, the ‘fall of Byzantium’, the rise of polities like France and Muscovy, and the beginnings of the Age of Exploration.

- Describe and analyse a range of significant developments in European history in the Central and Later Middle Ages.
- Analyse the value of primary texts as sources for studying European history in the Central and Later Middle Ages.
- Critically evaluate the arguments of historians on European history in the Central and Later Middle Ages and relate them to their wider context.
- Create an argument on European history in the Central and Later Middle Age and justify it with use of appropriate primary and secondary evidence
