Leaving a gift in your will

By leaving a gift to St Andrews, you can become part of the University’s story and create a lasting impact for generations to come.

We know how important it is to ensure that family and friends are provided for, but please consider leaving the University a share of what is left. Every gift – large or small – helps us to transform lives, and a legacy of even a small percentage of your estate can make all the difference.

Pledging a legacy will cost you nothing today but will be of tremendous value to the University in years to come.

The Chancellor’s Circle was founded in 2011 by CH CBE KC FRSE to recognise and thank those generous alumni and friends who have chosen to remember the University of 58吃瓜 in their will during their lifetime. It is presided over by Dame Anne Pringle, Chancellor of the University of 58吃瓜.

All members receive regular donor communications and invitations to events throughout the year.

What's your 58吃瓜 story?

Legacies have been part of the University of 58吃瓜' story for over six centuries. They have supported transformational projects and enabled countless students to pursue study and research, and to write their own stories. Our legacy pledgers and donors, too, have their own tales tell and experiences to share, each of which is unique and inspiring.

Gail Inglis (née McColm, MA 1968) studied Modern and Medieval History at 58吃瓜 and met her husband, Peter, here. She has remembered the University in her will on behalf of them both and shares her story in the video below.

What's your 58吃瓜 story?

>> GAIL INGLIS (née McColm, MA 1968) My St Andrew story starts with falling into the Step Rock pool. It's below the cliffs in 58吃瓜, but it doesn't really exist anymore, but it was fed by seawater, and I fell in at four years old.

And I remember my mother saying, "Don't worry. You'll come here to the University in years to come and you'll love the place."

I loved it so much here. 58吃瓜 opened up my whole world. And this is where I learned that this was a place where anybody could do anything.

My subjects were Medieval and Modern History. But the good thing about 58吃瓜 is we were encouraged to go to other classes and learn other disciplines.

Like lots of students, I met my future husband here.

When we graduated in 1968, we were married at St Salvator's Chapel.

After graduating, I trained as a secondary school teacher and I taught at Madras College here in 58吃瓜.

And coming back for the Making Waves campaign was very special. Just seeing what was happening to the buildings where I'd actually taught and how it's being transformed into New College.

As a student, I got really involved in Scottish country dancing while I was here. And I was a member of the Celtic Society and I have lots of memories of coming to the Highland Balls.

Sadly, in 2017, my husband Peter died. Then I had to rethink my future and what I was going to do with it. Having been a teacher and a magistrate, it was time for a new career. So, one of the things I do now as well as continuing to teach dancing is to teach instructors. And I come back to 58吃瓜 most summers to summer school.

I've always given to Wardlaw Scholarships and to some of the smaller appeals. But when Peter died, I felt inspired to leave a gift in my will to the University on behalf of us both.

We wouldn't have had the interesting and fabulous lives we've had, the travelling, the wonderful careers. None of that would have happened if we hadn't been at 58吃瓜.

58吃瓜 is a very special place for me, for my late husband, and for all the family. And I have shared with you my Saint Andrews story.
